Claims/Accidents

How is a claim handled?

If the accident occurred within TORONTO, there are no injuries and the damage to all the cars involved is MORE than $1,000.00, you must take the car or have it towed to an Accident Reporting Center. There are three of them and their addresses are: 39 Howden Road in Scarborough, 113 Toryork Drive in North York and 855 Oxford Street in Etobicoke. They are open 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year.

If the accident occurred in PEEL, there are no injuries, the car can be driven and the damage to all cars involved is MORE than $1,000.00, you must take the car to an Accident Reporting Center (there are lots of them). The one nearest to you can be found by calling 905-453-3311 which is the Peel Regional Police's main telephone number.

If the accident occurred OUTSIDE OF TORONTO AND PEEL REGION, where there are no Accident Reporting Centers, there are no injuries and the damage to all the cars involved is MORE than $1,000.00, then contact the police and have them take an accident report.

If there are injuries, the police should ALWAYS be called to the accident scene immediately.

If the accident occurred anywhere in Ontario, there are no injuries and the damage to all the cars involved is LESS than $1,000.00, there is no need to call the police. You should exchange the following information with the other driver:

When the notice of a claim is given to an insurer the claim is assigned to an adjuster who is an employee of your insurer. You deal with your own insurer whether you caused the accident or not. In some cases an adjuster will meet with you in person. In other cases, the entire claim will be handled over the telephone.

Most but not all insurers have repair shops in your community that they have authorized to begin repairs as soon as a car is brought to them. In these cases, the repairs are usually GUARANTEED by the insurer. Your adjuster will tell you where the nearest authorized shop is located. If you go to a repair shop of your choice, the adjuster will arrange to have an appraiser see the car and approve the repairs. In this case the repairs may not be guaranteed by the insurer and it is possible that there may be a slight delay in getting the repairs started to allow time for the appraiser to see your car and approve the repairs.

You will NOT be required to get 2 or 3 appraisals.

If YOU are injured, the claim is handled by your own insurer and the procedures are controlled by government rules and regulations.
