Do I have to report an accident?

The Insurance Act states that you must report any accident to your insurer. The Highway Traffic Act states you must report any accident to the police where the damage to all vehicles is over $1,000.00 or if there are injuries. The two Acts are completely separate legislation.

When completing an insurance application it is critical that you clearly state all accidents because the industry maintains a data base of information about claims. Insurers and many insurance brokers access that data base to confirm driving records. Failure to disclose an accident on a car insurance application will almost inevitably lead to the cancellation of your policy.
